In response to a huge groundswell of requests from fans who have found it hard to get by without my words of wisdom (thanks for the email, Dan) I am posting a little list I recently compiled of myths our culture tells us:
Humans are naturally monogamous
Sex is something you can go on enjoying until you’re 110 or dead, whichever comes first
You’re not getting older, you’re getting better
Romantic love canlast forever
Teamwork is essential to success and happiness™
Procrastination is a bad thing
Relentless positive thinking improves your life
Listening to Tony Robbins CDs makes you successful
Pink ribbons and a positive attitude can transform a cancer diagnosis from a crushing blow into a gift
Performance ‘issues’ in your relationship mean you’re suffering from sexual dysfunction, which fortunately is completely curable by Pfizer
Having children is essential for a happy, fulfilled life
Having children will ruin your life if you want to get ahead, unless you Lean In with the help of several million dollars and a household staff
The true purpose of life is to do your bit to improve the GNP. Painting the Mona Lisa, writing the great Canadian novel or eking out a tiny stipend in the arts makes you a traitor to fellow taxpayers forced to subsidize your delusions of relevance
Being a stay at home parent means you’re selfish, a waste of space and a drag on the economy
Being a working parent means you’re selfish, emotionally stunted and willing to sacrifice your children’s happiness for naked ambition
Government surveillance is no cause for concern if you live in a democracy and haven’t done anything wrong (See McCarthyism)
Mega corporations always put customers and employees first and would never stoop to bad service or poverty-level paycheques to appease rich corporate raiders and other unscrupulous ‘stakeholders’
Your call is important to us
